13th January 2007, Paris.

On the third day of my stay in Paris, it drizzled a bit.

No more museum! It was outside of Saint Germain des pres Church that we decided to meet up today.

a0072144_9252168.jpgA friend of mine who lives in Paris joined us and we went to this café called Laduree (http://www.laduree.fr/) on 21, rue Bonaparte, to have lunch.

I quite like this café; both interior and its ambiance. Both downstairs and upstairs reminded me of old good posh tea rooms in England. It actually did remind me of a tea house called Palm Court on Strand in London.

a0072144_9261297.jpgI had Club Sandwiches again, but this one was much better than the one I had the day before at Angelina.

Sandwiches here seem to be toasted and that is what we do in Japan too. I do like my sandwiches toasted, yes. Sandwiches with this thickness are always difficult to eat, aren’t they 

We saw this dish at the next table, which looked like cream stew with puffy pastry, and it looked divine! I will definitely be coming back here to have that next time!

There is a patisserie downstairs by the entrance door. It definitely looked like they sell more macarron than cakes! The shop started to pack with people. I did not know till now how French love this sweet (as I absolutely dislike it!)

We wandered around in St. Germain des pres, doing some window shopping in furniture shops and tableware shops.

We stopped by at Spanish deli shop called De la Rossa, as I saw lots of nice ham and sausages! They all looked so delicious that it took me a while to have finally decided to buy some chorizo.

The downstairs was like a real Spanish bar where there are a few tables and chairs that you can have drink and some ham and sausages as snacks (I think there was a bistro upstairs as well). Very small space to eat downstairs, but looked comfortable enough. I would love to try eating there in my next visit.

I bought a small kitchen gadget (again!) in a small shop by De la Rossa where I bought chorizo. This metallic thing is for making poached egg without breaking it! Great gadget!

In the same shop, I bought Irish line tea towel, which is one of my other collections, and really pretty heart-shaped oven-mittens for my mum. They looked not only cute but very practical! (No photo to show off how pretty they were, as I had sent them to her before having taken photos…)

No troubles so far today, but only half a day has passed, and at this moment nobody knew what's coming next :)

To be continued…..

12th January 2007, Paris.

At last, I was able to meet Lui and Sato-chan! After having left the museum, the first place we wanted to go was a cafe, and Lui chose this famouse cafe called Angelina .

I had not been back to Angelina for more than 17 years! I cannot remember anything good about this tea salon, and their famous Mont Blanc cake was awful, if my memory was correct....

a0072144_2422493.jpgI have told Lui that I did not like it last time I tried, but that cake was the reason why Lui wanted to visit this tea salon, so she had to try it, no matter how hard I warned her. :) Sato-chan had a berry tarte, as they did not have the cake she wanted in the first place.

As for me, I wanted savoury than sweets (nothing has changed from the old days. When I was in highschool, I used to be the only one who was having something like curry rice or sandwiches while other girls were having ice cream sundae and chocolate parfait), so I had their club sandwiches.

Cafe Creme was all we had for a drink. I did not realise this place was kind of posh, as cream and coffee came in a separate jug.

Club sandwiches I had was not bad, but was not that good either, but it filled my stomach ok.

The famouse Mont Blanc cake was, again, deadly sweet indeed! Just one bite was enough for me, although Lui was so excited and happy with the cake. She thinks it is dead good, while I think it is dead sweet. It was a huge piece of cake, but she finished it all without problems, which really impressed me.

a0072144_2425236.jpgWe wandered around Madeleine-Opera area, browsing some souvenier shops and card and poster shops, after the cafe. We walked to Starbucks on Bd. de Italiens, whose interior and ceiling are impressively beautiful, but it was full and there were no seats.

We had plenty time to kill before the dinner at this restaurant. As Sato-chan said that she was longing to go to H&M, we went to H&M next to one of department stores.

Yet, H&M is just one of the chained cheap clothes stores, and there is nothing particular about it, and why H&M, I wondered. Sato-chan told me that there was no H&M stores in Japan and she found their clothes and bags were very cute. I believe that there are more shops in Japan selling prettier clothes with better price and quality though ;)

a0072144_7424283.jpgH&M was horrendously packed and there was a long queue at every tills at upstairs and downstairs, but somehow I managed to squeeze into the shortest queue to buy these earings (photo). The shop was hot like a sauna, and I was sweat from top to bottom when we got out of the shop. Never go to a clothes shop when it is on sale after christmas!

To be continued...

a0072144_2344637.jpg12th January 2007, Paris.

It was another huge mistake that we decided to meet up inside of Musee de l'Orangerie. I thought that it would be easy for them to find it, as visiting this museum was one of their (my friend, Lui and Satoko, her sister-in-law) today's sightseeing plans, and that it would be warmer to wait inside,

but I was soooo wrong... I could see a long queue in front of the museum. There were two lines; one for non-reserved and the other one for reserved. Damn, I did not have a ticket. I did not even think that there might a queue! Why on earth did everybody have to want to go to this museum at the same as me?!!! It would take a damned long time to finally get to see them. Sigh.....

I just could not do nothing, so I left the queue and went up to talk to a guy who was working there. I explained to him that I wanted to go inside just to meet up with my friends, but he told me to call them to come out. Isn't he stupid? because if they had a mobile, I would have done it already by now and did not bother to take time to queue here! I explained more, but it seemed that he and his colleague did not speak English well, which was indeed very good afterall, as they let me skip the queue and let me in! Was it English or was it my charm that they let me get away with the queue? I don't know :) I want to believe it was my carm though, hahaha ;)

Yet, there was another queue, a queue to buy ticket this time.... Sigh... What I wanted was only to meet my friends, but God did not seem to like me to have an easy life....

I was almost devastated at this time and almost edged to explode with frustration.

I started to wonder, or more like to beg, whether they might come to have a sense to come and look for me at the entrance.

God must have decided that I had enough, and then there they were, near the entrance!! I kept calling their names, shouting. At this point, I could not care less if all eyes were on me :) They told me that they decided to come back to the entrace to look for me as they had already looked at all the paintings in the museum. Thanks god for their sensibleness!

I swear I will never ever suggest a museum as a meeting place, especially when you do not have mobiles.....

It was only my second (actually almost my first) day in Paris and I had not even see my friend yet, but already exhausted by too much energy used for the furstration that I had been having for the last 15 hours! I started to wonder what would happen next ..... ;)

a0072144_23405644.jpg11th January 2007, Paris.

Paris again! This time, to meet a friend of mine, Lui who were visiting Paris for 10 days with her sister-in-law.

I took a usual 19:00 Easyjet flight to Paris and arrived at Opera just after 11pm to meet Thierry who came to help me carrying my luggage.

We rang Lui’s mobile (she said that she was renting a mobile she could only use in France), but not only no reply but no connection. Thierry used his mobile, but still no connection either.

Unfortunately the only thing I had with me was her mobile number and a name of the hotel where she was staying. I took neither a phone number nor an address of the hotel!

So we were stuck in the middle of Paris at midnight, knowing nowhere to find her. I was suddenly panicking. I had to find the hotel! I vaguely remembered where it was, as I checked the location on their website when I was talking to her with Skype.

After having been wandering around and having asked a few people on a street, we finally (and luckily!) found the hotel (Thanks god for that)!

We walked in and asked a receptionist to call my friend, and there was another problem that he told me that nobody has been booked with that name! I started to feel as if it was me who was imagining all the things that my friend was coming from Japan and staying in Paris.

At the end it was only a pure misunderstanding of the receptionist. He thought that I booked a room with my friend’s name trying to check-in, as I for myself had a suitcase with me.

We found her at last! Phew….

Then there was another story :) The reason why there was no connection on her mobile was because she forgot to rent it at the airport!! She said that she was so engaged with a searching mission for this bilingual comic book I asked her to buy for Thierry (but I said only if she had time) at a transit that she totally forgot about her mobile!

She said that she phoned me in Liverpool and left a few messages. I knew someone phoned me in that morning, but as I was still in bed, I could not be bothered to pick it up or even to check a message. I always check an answering machine, but apparently not this time….

Funny how things like that can happen so easily, especially when you are so relied on mobiles nowadays that you do not really care if you have all the information with you.

At the end of the day the only thing mattered to me was that she was here and I found her! :)

Departure: I usually check-in approx. 30 mins before the departure, but I checked in very early this time, for the high security regulations at the airport. I assumed there'd be a crowd of people and a long que at the check-in counter, but no, empty as usual (photo above: left). I've never really noticed this statue of John Lennon before though ;) (photo above: right).

a0072144_1493712.jpg
Arrived, 1st Day in Paris: I took an airport bus (Roissy Bus) from Terminal 3 directly to Opera as usual, for it's most convinient and safer than taking RER B at night alone. I was waiting for a friend to pick me up at Opera Garnier, and couldn't resist taking a photo since this is one of the places where always reminds me of Paris and where I realise my presence in Paris! Really beautiful, Opera Garnier is (photo: right)

a0072144_150320.jpg
2nd Day: I was going to go to National Library (the end of Metro 14) to read some articles first, but as a friend of mine mentioned about a new Starbucks in Opera over the phone, whose interior is totally different from any other Starbucks, I changed a plan and went to this newly open Starbucks on Bd. de Italienes. The interior is the grand! Amazing ceiling (photo: left) and great atomosphere. It's a waste to be a chain coffee shop like Starbucks. The only thing I appreciated that this place was Starbucks was their non-smoking policy, I have to say. It's a shame that nobody could turn into something better than Starbucks. I was waiting for friends before our dinner reservation, reading an article about wordplay in Hebrew poetry, drinkin iced cafe latte. I was surprised how different Starbucks cafe latte here tasted from the one back at Starbucks in UK. Was it because of the great atomosphere of this beautiful place, or because of coffee beans? Coffee, in general, always tastes better in France anyway :)

3rd Day: We went to Le Marais to do some shopping, and bought quite a few bottles of BIODERMA (not Biotherma), which was recommended by a frined of mine whose dermocologist had originally recommended her when she had a problem with her skin (**he said that hard water in Europe was not good for skin and it's better to be wiped out before you put any cream on your face). On the way to the restaurant in Villiers, we changed a train at this very artie station called Arts et Metiers (2 photos below). I didn't realised that the entire wall of the paltform was made of bronze-looking metal until a friend of mine suggested to take a photo for my blog. Metal work by some artists were also displayed on the wall. Interesting, but I have to say it felt strange. You feel like as if you were inside of the spaceship or something :)
a0072144_15303.jpg
a0072144_1531152.jpg

I'm so determined to do some cultural wandering, including a visit to Bibliotheque Francois Mitterrand in my next trip to Paris (maybe at the beginning of December?)! :) xxx
xxx

Pienza, Italy,

Part II: 後編

After having explored enough in the village, it was time to eat. We (Ruth, Mike and I) were very hungry, but all restaurants already finished serving lunch. It was famouse Italian "siesta" time. By the time we found a place where we could sit down and eat, we couldn't care less if it's just a pizzaria, as it was the only place where was still serving the food.

I don't like to eat pizza in UK. It's hard to find good real crispy Italian pizza there. I only eat pizza in places where I know I can have good pizza, and there aren't many.....

a0072144_7121064.jpgWe sat at the table outside, as neither Ruth nor I wanted to stay and eat inside where was very smoky (people were smoking cigars). It was sooo hot that I couldn't sit still. I changed a seat from this one to the other one, but wherever I sat the sun was there, everywhere! too strong.

I tried to do everything I could do not to get burnt: I covered my left arm with my cardigan, I borrowed Ruth's pink hat to cover my face from the sun, but my balck cardigan absorbed all the heat, and I looked hideous in this pink hat with my green summer dress! We ordered some red wine, and had a lovely meal, but it was a torture to sit under the sun while we were eating.....

So, it was a heaven when we went to have gelato and sat under the shade, after having been baked all over! :)

I tried Panna Latte and Cafe flavour the day before, but this time, 2 scoops of Panna Latte! Yummy. I should have had more gelato while I was there, because I rarely see nice ice cream in England. I've heard that most of the ice cream in UK is made of lard and salad oil! No wonder it tastes like petrol. Eek.

a0072144_710512.jpgAfter we left Pienza, we stopped at another beautiful village in Tuscany, Montepulcciano (photos: left). Montepulcciano was something I always imagined what a Tuscan village to be looked like! We were there only to pick up some groceries, so didn't have time to explore this pretty village. It was a shame that we didn't have more time or we couldn't
a0072144_7124328.jpgcome back here for another day, but thanks to Mike's TomTom that led us to this place, we at least now know what the place looked like.

I want to come back to this lovely village again, definitely. xxx

Pienza, Italy,

Part I: 前編

The main reason of this trip to Tuscany was to attend Sharon and Mike's wedding, and I didn't therefore do a lot of sightseeing. The only palce I visited (and explored) was Pienza, which is only 20 mins drive from the villa I stayed. It's a small village on the top of the hill of Tuscany.

Pienza is very small but very pretty. Lots of narrow streets (photo above) where cars cannot come in, and these streets looked soooo Italian, well, at least to me :) Pienza reminded me of one of the TV commercials where this small car (I think it was Renault) was driving around the narrow streets. Every houses and buildings have intricated carving or design on their entrance doors and windows.

Pienza is know as its cheese, and there are quite a few cheese shops in the centre. Oh god, this cheese! Appearance can be deceptive, people say, but for this cheese, never! Appearance tells everything. It looks grouse and it smells horrifyingly strong!!! Even friends who like cheese thought that it smelled quite strong. It's very different from French cheese. I was crying out, "I need a nose-piece to block the smell, not an ear-piece!!" The smell was so strong that you could even smell it from the top of the street to the bottom, as far as the street goes!!! Believe me, the smell was that bad.

It was a hot day. Where we were walking was a kind of a hill looking down the great scenery of Tuscany. Beautiful place. It was too hot, and I felt dizzy and was trying to find a shade. I started to lose interest in admiring the view. At that moment, I couldn't care less how picturesque the scenery was! I had to get away from the sun....

We went into this Duomo (photo: right) in the middle of the village. I wondered if the wall paintings in the Duomo were original. I couldn't tell. I wanted to take a photo of the paintings, but decided not to, as I've heard that people here are quite strict about taking photos in churches. However, I couldn't resist taking a photo of the ceiling (photo: bottom).

I noticed that there were two booths by the entrance door, and I wondered what they were. I asked Ruth what they were for, and she told me that they were where people come and confess their sins. I don't think I've never seen the booths like them before. I was so impressed with this fine craftmanship of the panels (photo: right). There were 4 panels in the Duomo, and each of them are designed differently. There was also great work on the floor panels. I've decided not to take a photo, as most of them looked already badly weathered.

To be continued.... (The next part is about a pizzaria in Pienza.) xxx
